Fashion for kids
Emo style
I recently met two young boys, 11 and 14 year old, who wanted to change their look to emo style. They were looking for black shirts, black tight pants and anything that had printed skulls. It’s fantastic how they wanted to adopt a style they knew almost nothing about just because they thought it looked cool.
Being emo stands for a lot more than the way you dress. It comes with an attitude given by the fact that you can identify with the things promoted by emo culture. Emo stands for emotional. The movement started out from the punk rock music of the 90′s promoted by bands like Sunny Day Real Estate (SDRE), Rites of Spring ( ROS), Sonic Youth and many others. The songs that emo listen to are about injustice, unhappiness, broken love and can contain words full of violence and these are songs you can easily identify with as a teenager strugling to definy a personality and trying to find something that makes you different from the rest.
The emo kids usually adopt an interesting haircut and they dye their hair strong black or other strong vivid colours. And their hair is always straight and rigid. Part of the hair usually covers one eye or both of them. Make-up is also a part of the look , for boys and girls, and most of them underline their eyes with black or make the make-up more agressive with strong dark colours that contour the eyes. They even use a light powder cream, that makes the face more light so that their eyes can be of the greatest importance.
When it comes to clothes, emo preffer jeans that are narrow, maybe with holes and patches and chains attached as a belt. Belts can also have strong vivid colours with cartoon prints or skulls.Their t-shirts have strong prints and are mostly body -fitted. The prints can be with emo bands names, broken hearts, cartoons, writings with impact messages. Although these outfits can be pretty expensive, they look more outworn, second hand style, with a vintage touch. Emo fashion is always bold and controversial, as the persons themselves reflect their attitude through clothes. The shoes are also important. Sneakers or skate shoes, they often look wornout, ripped apart and durty.
All this comes with accesories like mailman type bags, lots of bracelets, rings, and the more obvious piercing. There’s nothing you can pierce if you are emo. Generally the nose, the lips, the eyebrows andthe ears. And some of them paint their nails black or atleast polish them, girls or boys.
Changing your looks to that of an emo isn’t that hard. But can you identify yourself with their mentality and perspective on life? Emo’s tend to consider women as muses and heartbreakers by default. Emo’s go understand love and friendship in a different way than most people would. For example, emo boys kiss on the lips to express their feelings for eachother or just for saying hi!
Fashion exploits the emo culture and brigns new trends to the market. But they’re not for everyone to understand or wear. So be careful when your child tells you he wants to go emo. It’s not as simple as it looks.
